I was born in Montreal in 1953. I attended McGill University, Montreal, from which I graduated with an Honours BA in 1976, and a B.C.L. and LL.B from McGill's Law School in 1980. These degrees provided me with the opportunity to write the bar exam anywhere in Canada. I chose to move to Ontario and write the Ontario Bar exam.

I moved to Ottawa in 1980 to article and write my bar exams. Employed by the firm of Binks, Chilcott and Simpson, I became the first woman this firm had ever hired as a lawyer or student lawyer. I was called to the bar in 1982.

My first work experience after being called to the bar was as lawyer for the Federal Ministry of the Solicitor General. I was a policy analyst on the new Young Offenders Act.

After a few months in the government sector, I decided I wanted to be a courtroom lawyer and moved to Hamilton in 1982, where I started working at the firm of Morris and Lewis. I worked in criminal and civil litigation for the first few years, after which I moved exclusively into civil litigation. I continued working at Morris and Lewis, first as an employee, then as a partner, until 1992.

In 1992, I started my own firm, first in partnership, and then in 2006, as sole practitioner: The Rhona L. Waxman Law Offices.

Today, I practice law solely in the area of plaintiff personal injury. That means that I represent only people who have been injured and that I sue insurance companies to get my clients proper compensation for their injuries and losses.

In December 1999, I earned Certification as a Specialist in Civil Litigation by the Law Society of Upper Canada, becoming one of very few lawyers certified as a specialist.

I have been a speaker at many seminars for professional organizations, lawyers and other groups, and I have served on the Executive Board of Directors of The Advocate Society, The Hamilton Law Association and the Hamilton Medical-Legal Society.

My interests go beyond law of course. I have also been involved in various community projects and initiatives through my volunteer work on the Board of Directors of McQueston Legal & Community Services, the Shalom Village Home for the Aged, Temple Ashe Sholom, Sholom Village Foundation, and Symphony Hamilton.

Theatre is one of my favourite art forms. I not only enjoy going to the theatre, but I also enjoy acting, and have appeared in several of the Theatre Aquarius Lawyer shows and in amateur theatre in Hamilton and Waterdown. In fact, I won a guest appearance on Air Farce. I had the privilege of helping to load the chicken cannon. Hiking and biking are also activities that I enjoy, as are most water sports, including sailing, swimming, canoeing, scuba-diving and snorkeling. top
